There is no other low-cost promotional method out there that will easily give you large numbers of visitors, some of whom may come back to your website again and again.

  • Primary and Secondary Traffic. Primary traffic is the large amount of visitors who come directly from social media websites. Secondary traffic is referral traffic from websites which link to and send you visitors, after they come across your content through the social sites.
  • High Quality Links. Becoming popular on social news websites like Digg or Reddit will get you a large number of links, some of which may be topically relevant, some not. A good story can realistically acquire a large number of high quality editorial links, most of which cannot be easily bought.

It doesn’t. At least not directly. Every site or business that wants to expand and become profitable, needs a core group of supporters who will be willing to make purchases or recommend the site to others. Your site needs to perpetuate itself.

The more supporters you have, the faster word spreads about your site. Social media marketing is an excellent way to get people to come into your site to take a look at at what you have to offer. You will grow when there are a group of loyal visitors ready to always act upon what you have to offer.

Why Bloggers Should Learn How to Use Social Media

There are many ways to build a popular blog and many methods to promote your website. For example, you can start leaving comments regularly on many high traffic blogs in your niche or perhaps, consider guest posting on other bigger blogs.

My marketing strategy for blogs is very simple. I don’t comment actively, hold contests or write guest posts. I’ve never done any of that for any blog I’ve ever set up. Some people might enjoy doing it but its just a little too tedious for me.

What I do instead is strategic. I focus on creating just one excellent blog post, which I will then push through social media sites and email pitches to other bloggers. This is straightforward and I don’t have to run around many blogs putting up my URL and thinking of something insightful to say.

Think about it. Why write 50 guest posts for 50 different blogs when you can easily just write one article and get an equal amount of links and greater traffic through the use of social media? Guest posting builds relationships but I reckon there are many more powerful ways to network with others.

It isn’t just about creating articles and then promoting them on social sites as an afterthought. It’s about putting social media in the center of your marketing strategy, optimizing your site or content and making it an attention magnet.

Social Media and It’s Potential for Your Site: An Example

I recently launched a new blog a months ago and took around 20 hours to create a feature article. I subsequently promoted it on various social websites through my own influencer profiles. I also sent out emails to large sites in the same niche.

The article eventually got to the Digg, del.icio.us and Reddit frontpage and received over 140+ reviews on StumbleUpon. It accumulated well over 800 unique links, including some from very heavily trafficked websites. Some of them alone sent more traffic than the frontpage of del.icio.us.

The article is more than a month old and it is still receiving incoming links. Subscribers are up by over 800% and I received around 12K pageviews everyday for the first month. Bear in mind this is only a one month old site.

While not every article in every niche will receive the same amount of attention or success, this illustrates the great potential of social media. I’ve become a firm believer in having a solid social media strategy for every website I develop. It is important for success on every level, even for sites that are already popular.

Fundamentals of Social Media Marketing: An Article Series

Social media marketing is not difficult at all. It is something every one can do with some effort and knowledge. It isn’t some secret art form that only experts can master. Unlike other skills, social media has a remarkably low barrier of entry. Everyone is invited to the party. No one is excluded.

I know how social media works. I know what type of content/bait works for different websites. I know what type of marketing strategy to adopt for a high possibility of success. This knowledge is something you can acquire yourself too.

Now that I’ve illustrated the value of social media, a step by step introduction to social media websites and the appropriate marketing strategies to adopt is in order. I plan to start an article series on DIY social media marketing, to teach absolute beginners and bloggers/webmasters what they need to do for social media success.

Some of the advanced social media strategies I have in mind might not be appropriate for a large audience as they can be extremely intricate; unless you’re an active user of the site, it probably isn’t something you’ll appreciate reading about.

I might consider setting up some private newsletters or forums for these advanced tactics, so those who are serious about learning about them can opt-in and we can discuss them away from the public arena. More details later on.

10 Fantastic Facebook Fan Page Features

1. Title page
When creating your Fan page one of the first things you will need a good title. If you’re branding yourself you will want to use your name. If you’re branding a business or concept then you’ll need to give a little more thought to it. Give it some good thought and be prepared for some traffic.

2. Professional picture or tower
A Fan page is a more professional page than your profile. So you may want a more professional image on it. Again, if you are branding yourself you will want an image of yourself, and the more professional looking the picture the better. When you do settle on a picture… keep it there. If you change you picture often you’ll loose familiarity.

You can also create a “Tower” this is a custom picture with graphics. They are very sharp and professional. This will require some coding in the FBTML world and may be better to outsource.

3. Engaging Bio
A good bio is worth its weight in gold. The right words or phrases will allow the new visitor to get the idea of what your page is about. Simple, funny, edgy is good… make sure to keep it clean and professional. You are creating an image for your business. If that business is you, you want to make sure you’re leaving the right impression. Keep on the lookout for some changes coming up later this year. There’s some noise out there that Facebook will change the dimensions for the picture and tab sections.

4. Change the options
After you created your page, go to the front of it and change the options to “post by page and fans.” This setting allows for your “fans” to feel like they can interact with you easier.
* To do this click on options
* Click on settings
* Under default view for wall select “posts by page and fans.”

5. Interactive information
Under the information tab, you’ll want to lead visitors to your blog or website. You can do this by giving them a reason why they should go there. Be informative… don’t’ be afraid to tell them that there’s more goodies in the link below. If people see a weak information section they’ll probably leave just as fast as they got there. So make it interesting.

6. Vanity URL
After you have 25 fans you can create a vanity url. This is very powerful and easier to note on your marketing material. When selecting a name keep in mind simple is better. Go www.facebook.com/username for instance my page is http://www.Facebook.com/TribeMastery. You can also grab a vanity name for your personal profile as well.

7. Custom Landing or Welcome Tab
A custom welcome tab is a great way to greet new visitors. You can use a video, an opt in form, pictures and text. You will need to know some FBTML, again you may want to outsource to someone who can help. You can find a good sample here: http://www.facebook.com/ExtremeNetworking

8. Content in… Content out
Keep it fresh by adding content often. You may want to have your page updated anywhere from once every 2 days to 3-4 times a day. You don’t want any more than that or the updates will start to go unnoticed. If you’re page is brand new you’ll want to give your fans the option of adding content. Encourage them to share information that’s relevant to your niche or business. Personal stories and ideas are perfect as well.

If you’re page is really buzzing with content and fans then you may want to remove the share feature and have your fans go to the discussion tab. This would start to make sense when the number of fans reaches the multiple thousands.

Content out means sending your posts to Twitter. In the edit my page section you can broadcast your status posts to your Twitter feed. Only your updates go get published to your feed. Your fan’s posts do not. In addition to twitter you can grab the html code for the Facebook fan page box and add it to a text widget on your blog. This cross syndication process really helps your content go viral. Again, only your posts on your page will be seen on your blog.

9. Be Active
It’s called “Social Media” for a reason… be social for crying out loud. For instance, when you start a conversation with someone do you leave the room while their talking? Of course not. So make sure you keep coming back and replying to everyone who stops by and leaves a comment on your page or status. You can also reply to your own status updates to keep the thread going. You may need to give it a little time to catch on.

10. Create An Active Fan page.
There’s a difference in being active and create a; vibrant, attractive, active fan page. You can be adding all the great content you want all day long, but if your fans are not coming back, then there’s a reason.

* Ask questions in your status
* Tag people when adding their link
* Encourage people to ask questions

* Message you fans. Yes you can still do this. Click edit page, then click “message to fans”
* Utilize the discussion board. This is a great way to archive posts as well.
* Thank your fans
* Announce milestones on your journey

How To Get More Facebook Fans

Platform-specific communities can be a challenge to grow. It’s daunting because you’re probably already growing a voice for your brand on something like a self-hosted blog. But if you can spark rapid growth in a network external of your own, it can be a consistent organic referral source to the places you’re really interested in funneling traffic. Essentially, it’s a valuable outpost.

So how can you spark rapid growth on your Facebook fan page?

1. Spark initial growth numbers within the network quickly

An easy way to start is get multiple influential users to invite all of their friends to become fans of the page. If you can get 20 people each to invite 100 users, and encourage those users to invite their own friends, you’ll start to see growth. Use incentives if necessary – contests, rewards for joining, etc. Facebook has specific rules now that make some of this more difficult, but there are still plenty of creative ways to do this.

2. Leverage external traffic streams/subscriber bases

Take stock of all your communities, email lists, websites and any other place you have a digital presence. Start to call them to action to join your fan page. Add links to your blog sidebar, put a CTA on the homepage of the website you’re already marketing, add a link in employee emails, put links in your email marketing, etc. Put it bold and up front to start – the key is to funnel enough subscribers to the page where a natural cycle of growth begins by virtue of more people becoming fans. The strategy here is simple: leverage what you have to spark growth in a new community until it’s growing organically.

But remember: the long-term play is to consistently siphon people out of Facebook to a community where SEO/social media value can really ramp up and you’re not limited by the rules of playing in a network you don’t control. In other words: once your fan page is growing organically, flip the funnel: start to move people out of Facebook to your own, self-hosted platform like a blog.

3. Continually update the page with new content

More content on the page is going to be more content for users to interact with. And, due to how Facebook has setup their system, users consistently engaging with content is a key component to growth. By reaching into the streams of individual users your brand can start to grow fast if your content is worth reacting to.

    Other ideas:

  • Buy targeted advertising on Facebook’s platform
  • Leverage your offline networks (TV/newspaper/magazine ads, etc.)
  • Run a contest/promotion offline of Facebook, yet encourage users to become a fan during the promotion process.
  • Create some unmissable content published exclusively on your Facebook fan page
  • Frequently make special offer announcements and even new product announcements through the page first
  • Hire a community manager to implement ongoing growth opportunities across all your social channels

  • End your press releases with your Facebook fan page link
  • Provide talking points to publicized team members to say become a fan in Facebook during interviews
